A few years ago (during my sad and fat rut) I found myself really bitter about modern music.
Jimmy Eat World. My Chemical Romance. The nonsense of Top 40 radio.
No thanks to all of it. I still lamented Layne Staley’s death and the fact Metallica hadn’t put out an album since I was in high school.
But you know the story. Fat kid grows up, gets over himself, starts branching out.
Around 2014 I decided I didn’t want to be the “Music from my generation is the only music worth listening to” guy. Musically, I was inspired by streaming services, which suddenly made a ton of new stuff available at a moment’s notice.
So I took advantage. I try to listen to as much new music as possible. Most of it I find on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlists or NPR’s All Songs Considered podcast. Some of it I just…stumble upon by happenstance.
Every year since 2014 I’ve collected all the new songs I like and throw them into Spotify playlists.
Here’s 2016’s collection, in no real order. It’s a lot of indie rock and electronic music. I didn’t find a lot of rap I liked this year and I still haven’t quite connected with Lemonade or Blonde yet. Still digging though both.
You can shuffle it for free (with ads on occasion) if you don’t have a Spotify account. I’ll also embed a few YouTube videos below, including the final two which were my fave songs of the year.
I hope you listen to it and find something you like.
(these last two are easily my favorite songs from this year)
