I’m a big WordPress fan. I love the platform, and especially the community and plugins behind it.
But for whatever reason, it doesn’t handle images well. In a few different ways.
My biggest issue was its random rotation of photos. I would upload an image taken in portrait mode but it would upload in landscape mode. And even after manually rotating it in the WordPress Media interface, it would still publish incorrectly.
You can see an example in this post.
I found a couple fixes to this issue.
First, the issues is images taken by your mobile device – most likely your iOS phone. WordPress defaults to the orientation layout from the phone (as defined in the EXIF data) – even if you change it in WordPress.
There are two fixes:
- Manually alter all images in Photoshop or GIMP before uploading to WordPress. In other words, a giant pain in the ass.
- Use this plugin. I found it in this thread. It won’t fix all the effed up images you’ve already uploaded, but it’ll work for any you upload in the future.
Just another reason why I love WordPress – whatever flaws you find in the system, there’s a plugin or hack somewhere out there that can fix it.
And yes I’m too lazy to go back and re-upload those old sideways pictures.
